Al Smith Playground
Manhattan Parks commissioner Bill Castro, Kevin Rampe, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation president, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Couniclmember Alan Gerson were among the officials who joined P.S. 1 students for the opening of the refurbished Al Smith Playground on Catherine St. between Madison and South Sts. It was the sixth project, recently completed with L.M.D.C. money out of its $24.6 million fund for the renovation of 13 green spaces in Downtown. Other completed parks include East River Park ballfields, Tribeca Park, Bowling Green Park and Washington Market Park. Most likely, Coenties Slip will be the next plaza restored as part of the plan, according to the Parks Dept.
