Remembering the fallen, on 9/11/04

Relatives of the people killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 returned to the site Saturday to mark the three-year anniversary of the attacks. Parents and grandparents of the victims read the names of the 2,749 who died at the W.T.C. If plans to build the memorial of reflecting pools at the Twin Tower footprints proceed on schedule, this will be the last Sept. 11 that family members will be able to return to the footprints before the Reflecting Absence design is completed in 2009. Saturday night, the Tribute in Light installation returned to the Downtown skyline. The twin beams of light just to the west of where the Twin Towers once stood, could be seen from many miles away.

Tribeca Artist June Aherns, above, distributed handmade hearts made by individuals from around the world at Washington Square Park Saturday as part of her Healing Heart Project. Following Sept. 11, 2001, Ahrens collected over 3,000 handmade hearts in memory of those who perished on 9/11. She says each heart represents her wish for hope and peace. She gave them away Saturday so the project could continue as a living memorial.
