They’ve got it covered

Following an incident last week where a young female skateboarder fell on top of a Con Edison steam manhole in the East Village at Second Ave. near 13th St., burning the skin on her lower back, workers for Con Ed on Thursday installed new manhole covers Downtown that the utility says are safer. The new covers are coated with a glossy resin, which doesn’t conduct heat from the steam. The crew of workers installed a new cover at Greenwich and Murray Sts., above, and, in general, were replacing the covers in the area between Federal Plaza and Reade St. The utility has been under intense scrutiny about its street structures since January, when Jodie Lane, an East Village resident, was electrocuted on E. 11th St. while walking her dogs when she fell on a slush-covered Con Ed junction box cover.
