Downtown rape reported

An intruder in the six-story commercial building at 373 Broadway forced a woman into a bathroom on the fifth floor and sodomized her in the late morning on Monday, according to police. The Special Victims Unit is investigating the April 12 incident, but police did not release a description of the suspect. Police would not say whether the victim, 36, worked in the building or was a visitor.

A man who works on the block said he saw the victim get into an ambulance after the attack holding her head in pain.

Police said the building, which has one elevator and a stairway, has minimal security. There are several vacant offices and a few textile firms in the building, which is between Franklin and White Sts. It was the first reported rape in the First Precinct in more than two years.
