Celebrating their successful effort to preserve affordable rents, the Independence Plaza North Tenants Association honored former light heavyweight boxing champion Jose Torres and his wife Ramona as “Tribeca Citizens of the Year,” and City Council Speaker A. Gifford Miller as “Stand-up Politician of the Year” at the I.P.N. April 15 “We are Tribeca” event. Torres, bottom left, an I.P.N. resident, greets a boxing fan. Miller, above right, receives his award from Neil Fabricant, tenant association president. The award is a photo of Torres’ 1965 championship fight. Miller’s face appears in the doctored photo instead of the referee’s. The speaker was honored for supporting the tenants’ successful deal with the landlord, Laurence Gluck, who is taking the complex out of the Mitchell-Lama program at the end of June. The event raised funds for a political campaign to elect candidates who support continued funding for rent voucher programs.
