Dancer gets her way
On March 31, a historical tribute to Anna Sokolow, renowned choreographer, dancer and teacher was presented at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on Christopher St. In conjunction with the dance concert presented by Linda Diamond & Company was a ceremony at 1 Christopher St., where a new sign co-naming the street Anna Sokolow Way was unveiled following the dance concert. The performance featured some of Sokolows later works, created when she was in her late 80s. She died in 2000 at age 90. Councilmember Christine Quinn, Mayor Bloomberg and Community Board 2 approved the street co-naming for Sokolow, who resided for over 50 years at 1 Christopher St. It is the first time a woman choreographer has had a street named after her in New York City. (A street is co-named for Alvin Ailey.)
