Girls Prep gets a new home

The threat of a lawsuit forced the Department of Education and Chancellor Joel Klein to think twice about exercising their “emergency powers” as it pertained where the young women of Girls Prep will attend classes this fall.

It was decided that Girls Prep would move to an alternative site for the next school year as opposed to taking up more space in the building at East Houston Street. The new site is at 51 Astor Place.

Had the intended expansion occurred, students from P.S. 188 and P.S. 94, co-tenants of the East Houston Street building, would have felt the crunch, thus the lawsuit from Advocates for Children that would have sought a restraining order against Klein, nullifying any decision made under the “emergency powers” clause.
