Regent closes

Regent Wall Street opened its doors for the last time Thursday, Jan. 15 for a Wall Street Rising fundraiser, above. The hotel announced at the end of 2003 that it would be closing for financial reasons. The fundraiser drew David Patterson, the State Senate’s minority leader, left, who chatted with Julie Menin, president of Wall Street Rising, a non-profit small business group. The hotel is likely to be converted to condos and Menin said she hoped when the landmark building at 55 Wall St. reopens, the Grand Ballroom also reopens for public events. Over the last few years, the ballroom hosted numerous high-profile events such as the ill-fated Liza Minelli-David Gest union. But the hotel was also the only space Downtown large enough to hold over 1,000 residents desperate for information a few weeks after the 2001 terrorist attack. Menin said in fitting community fashion, the Regent donated the restaurant space for her group’s fundraiser.
