Downtown Express photo by Julie Shapiro Finally easy to cross at Vesey again Much to the delight of Battery Park City residents and commuters, the escalator at the Vesey St. bridge finally reopened this week, nearly six months after it closed for repairs. A storm flooded the escalator on the east side of the bridge last September, requiring a new chain and other parts that had to be specially manufactured in Germany. But while the escalator was back in service Monday afternoon, the elevator was on one of its frequent outages. Tom Mellett, construction manager with the state Dept. of Transportation, said the Schindler Group had not responded to the state’s request for repairs to the elevator. |
