Tiger comes in with a bang

Chinatown celebrated the beginning of 4708 – the Year of the Tiger – Sunday. There were firecrackers, lion and dragon dancers, colorful party poppers and of course many exchanges of red envelopes. Tiger years are said to be tumultuous with lots of change. On Friday and Saturday, Sara D. Roosevelt Park was the site of the annual Flower Market, a pre-New Year tradition, bottom right and center left, on opposite page. The annual Lunar New Year parade will be this Sunday, starting at 11:30 a.m. at Mott and Canal Sts, winding its way through Chinatown. Many politicians showed up for part of the weekend’s festivities including City Comptroller John Liu, center in bottom photo. Liu, who in November became the first Chinese-American elected to a citywide office, received an enthusiastic reception. Many in the crowd stopped to shake his hand or to get a photo with him.
