Open portfolios Eighth grade students interested in pursuing art in high school often spend hours and hours preparing portfolios of work that few people see. Nicole Schorr, visual arts teacher at Manhattan Academy of Technology, thought students should “gain a little bit of recognition for their dedication,” and organized an art show at the Chinatown school last week. Schorr, who teaches the portfolio class, said for three months, students came to M.A.T. an hour early at 7:30 a.m., stayed an hour after school, and showed up on Saturdays for 5 hours (including Halloween) to work on their art. Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens and LaGuardia in Manhattan, were the two most popular art high school choices of M.A.T. students this year.
