Clinic expansion

A Lower East Side health clinic is expanding with about $1.4 million of federal stimulus money. The Community Healthcare Network’s center at 150 Essex St. will be able to serve more patients when it adds a second floor, officials announced Monday.

“The 20 jobs that will be created here with stimulus funds will help provide health care for more than 4,250 patients, many of whom lack health insurance,” U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney said in a statement, referring to both construction and health-related jobs.  “Creating jobs, providing much-needed health care, and improving people’s lives – it’s a triple win for our community.”

Catherine Abate, C.E.O. of the health network and a former state senator Downtown, thanked Maloney for securing the money in Washington. About 85 clinics around the nation received similar grants.  The expansion is expected to take two years to complete.
