A new park for Canal
CaVaLa Park — the triangular-shaped public space at the intersection of Canal, Varick and Laight Sts. in Tribeca — undergoes last-minute construction before its expected opening within the next two weeks. The new park contains an open lawn and various plantings around its perimeter, as well as plenty of bench seating and a waterfall bisecting the park parallel to Canal St., harkening back to the time when the site had a canal instead of a street. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. put $2.4 million into the $3.3 million project and the balance came from the Paul and Irma Milstein Foundation and the mayor’s office.
