Island kites and bikes
The lack of wind last weekend didn’t stop hundreds of people from trying to fly kites on Governors Island. The first 250 visitors to the island last Friday, Saturday and Sunday got free kites, and all visitors got free hour-long bike rentals. The line for bikes was long, as New Yorkers and travelers from farther afield hoped to pedal around the island’s car-free paths. Governors Island is open Fridays through Sundays until Oct. 12.
