Free kites and bikes

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Governors Island is offering free bike rentals to visitors for up to an hour. The first 250 visitors each day will also get a free kite to fly.

Transportation Alternatives is sponsoring this weekend’s programs with the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation. In June, Transportation Alternatives started offering free-bike Fridays on Governors Island, and more than 20,000 cyclists have visited the island since then.

Free ferries to Governors Island leave from the Battery Maritime Building, near South and Whitehall Sts. The island is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
