Perhaps some green-thinking straphangers were helping the Metropolitan Transportation Authority sort the recyclables last Friday on the E platform of the World Trade Center station. Coincidentally, WNYC Radio reported the next day that the Spitzer administration is considering adding recycling bins to the subway in an effort to save money and increase the resale value of paper by keeping it clear of other garbage. Currently the M.T.A. pays contractors to sift through garbage looking for recycling materials to sell.
“The constant haggling for repairs, having a hostile relationship with your landlord as a rent-regulated tenant, this becomes your lifestyle,” she said.
