Cougars top M.A.T. in friendly Downtown rivalry
The I.S. 89 Cougars basketball teams bested their crosstown rivals at Manhattan Academy of Technology Tuesday in the opening games of the season at M.A.T. in Chinatown.
The Battery Park City school’s boys team beat M.A.T. 3626, while the Cougar girls won a close game in the last minute against the Dragons.
John De Matteo, M.A.T.’s athletic director and coach, praised Blake Hepburn, who runs I.S. 89’s after-school basketball program for Manhattan Youth.
“Blake’s a great guy and he does a tremendous job year after year coaching the wonderful student athletes at I.S. 89,” De Matteo said. “It’s a great, friendly rivalry that’s been going on for years and I hope it continues to grow as students continue to see their old friends go to M.A.T. and 89. I thought my kids played hard tonight, but it’s still early in the season and we made a lot of mistakes…. It’s going to be a great, competitive season.”
The M.A.T. girls were up by a point with 50 seconds to go. De Matteo had his Dragons hold the ball, but they got called for a carry and the Cougars took the ball and came down for the win.
De Matteo said Patty Rosa played a tremendous game at the point guard and Shaakirra Harewood, Jubilee Domonech, Akeyle Lewis, Ellen Mullan Jayes, Emma Huibrejste, Destiny Torres and Ashley Thomas all put in solid efforts for the girls. On the boys side, he said Emanuel Mendoza and Byron Baez shined for M.A.T.

“The constant haggling for repairs, having a hostile relationship with your landlord as a rent-regulated tenant, this becomes your lifestyle,” she said.
