Rev. Mitsutaka Inui conducted a Jichinsai ceremony, a traditional Japanese Shinto ritual, Tuesday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new New Museum of Contemporary Art on Bowery between Stanton and Rivington Sts. The ritual, performed before the start of construction projects, asks the earth’s spirit for permission to build. The museum, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, is expected to open in 2007.
