Battery Park celebrations

Writer Frank McCourt, above at left, and Najah Holder, 7, left, of the Carmine Recreation Center joined a multi-celebration in Battery Park Monday. The author of “Angela’s Ashes” admired the newly restored Immigrants statue near Castle Clinton, while Holder and friends enjoyed the Spiral Fountain in the park’s new Battery Bosque area. The fountain and statue were the last phase of the $8.5 million Bosque project funded by the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. The final piece of the celebration marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the immigrant intake center at Castle Garden, where newcomers were processed from 1820 to 1897, and noted the launch of www.CastleGarden.org, a database of the 10 million immigrants who came to America between those years.
