Stadium sense
To The Editor:
We are so accustomed to being disappointed by our political leaders that Speaker Silvers decision to nix the Bloomberg-Pataki stadium plan comes as an unexpected breath of fresh air.
Exactly what tipped the balance in determining the speakers decision, we may never know. However perhaps like me, he found amid the many voices weighing in on the plan none more cogent than the Downtown Express recent editorial, Stand firm against the stadium, Mr. Speaker (May 27 June 2).
Congratulations are due Mr. Silver for standing up for the interests of all New Yorkers despite intense pressure to knuckle under.
And for providing perspicacious counsel in urging the speaker on, the Downtown Express deserves recognition for effective advocacy on behalf of our community.

Re A cyclists death is a reminder of streets dangers and More are now riding brakeless track bikes (news articles, May 20 - 26):
Before we get too teary-eyed about bicyclists who have been hit by cars, lets pause and remember the pedestrians who have been hit by bicyclists who have been: riding on the sidewalk; running red lights; riding the wrong way on a one-way street.
When bicyclists start obeying traffic regulations, they will get my sympathy, not before.

Re Veterans protest against the war at Downtown memorial (news article, June 3 9):
Obviously you know that in Claire F. Hamilton you have an excellent reporter. I want to congratulate your paper and Ms. Hamilton on her exceptional insight and light touch. She portrayed the event and its participants through the eye of a keen observer without editorializing or spin.
This was our fourth year of this solemn event and the press coverage was better then ever. However if we had to give an award for accurate and comprehensive coverage, Ms. Hamilton and your paper, Downtown Express, would receive it for 2005. Thanks again.
