Ready to demolish notorious Bowery building
Firefighters recently broke the windows at 295 Bowery, in preparation for the buildings demolition for a new project that is part of the Cooper Sq. Urban Renewal Area redevelopment. The next day, the construction company covered the building in a drop cloth. At the turn of the last century, the building was a bar and brothel known as McGurks Suicide Hall, because the prostitutes frequently committed suicide. The buildings most recent residents, who have been relocated to new homes, included Kate Millett, the graphic artist and feminist writer.
