Scottish celebration at Hanover Square
Scottish pipers came to Hanover Square Wednesday to celebrate Tartan Day at the future home of the British Memorial Garden commemorating the 67 British citizens who were killed Sept. 11, 2001. The Earl of Caithness presented the city with a symbolic brick from Scotland. Officials with the British Memorial Garden Trust, which organized the event, said the Lower Manhattan garden and memorial should be finished in a year. Tartan Day, April 6, recognizes the contributions Scottish-Americans have made to the U.S., and was began in 1998 after the U.S. Senate passed a resolution marking the day.
