Paddling hard down the lazy river

Bill Menke, of Tappan, N.Y., above, leads the Great Hudson River Paddle of 2003 into Pier 26, right, on the Tribeca waterfront on Saturday afternoon July 12, at the end of the 10-day event that began in Albany. Menke led the expert paddlers who made the entire 149 miles. But many others, paddling canoes, kayaks and rubber rafts, joined the event at one of the 10 overnight stops along the way. The paddle celebrated the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail, public access to the river and the riverside communities of the Hudson River Valley.
